Robert Wegner, MD, FASMBS
Dr. Wegner, a board-certified general surgeon, joined the St. Francis Center for Surgical weight loss in 2010 and currently serves as Medical Director. He completed his general surgery residency at the University of Illinois at Chicago and bariatric fellowship at the University of Iowa, the recognized birthplace of weight loss surgery. During fellowship he published journal articles reporting the remarkable benefits of laparoscopic gastric bypass leading to the resolution of type 2 diabetes and hypertension. He currently performs over 400 cases per year and specializes in laparoscopic gastric bypass, laparoscopic gastric sleeve, and converting laparoscopic gastric bands to gastric bypass with only one surgery. Dr. Wegner’s outstanding outcomes have helped the Center achieve United Health Care Center of Excellence, Blue Cross Blue Shield Center of Distinction, and Cigna Center of Excellence. He is an active member of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) and the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES).
Along with Dr. Wegner’s extensive surgical training, he is also a certified personal trainer and former Gold’s gym owner with over twenty years of experience in the fitness industry. He has dedicated his life to helping others by educating them about the benefits of exercise and nutrition. Dr. Wegner is a compassionate surgeon with life experiences that give him a unique insight into the challenges that a weight loss surgery patient faces. He looks forward to helping his patients receive the benefits of weight loss surgery and ultimately achieve a higher quality of life.
