Allison’s Adventure – So it begins…

April 20, 2016

Allison&MomMy battle with weight loss has never been over my love for or overindulgence in food. I don’t turn to food when I get depressed and I’m not an overeater. Ever since I gave birth to my first son I have been fighting against my tanking metabolism. At a point in my life, I would diet and go to the gym twice a day but I was never able to overcome my metabolism issue.

Last August my mom had gastric sleeve surgery performed by Dr. Virginia Weaver at Saint Francis Center for Surgical Weight Loss. She had horrible diabetes and was overweight. Fast forward to now, and she has lost 84 pounds and is diabetes free. My mom said to me, “If I had done this when I was your age, I could have gotten more out of life.” She’s been my inspiration, my backbone and she is the reason I am having the surgery.

I met with Dr. Robert Wegner, was tested and they said I was a candidate for the surgery. I opted for gastric bypass surgery over the sleeve because it made the most sense for me.  Since my first appointment I’ve had a psych evaluation, cardio testing, GI testing, months of weigh-ins, two nutrition classes and a dietitian visit. I started my liver cleanse two Mondays ago. The purpose behind the liver shrink is to make sure Dr. Wegner has enough room to move around my stomach during surgery.

The first few days of my cleanse were awful. I was starving, I was a Bear.  One day, my son asked for a hot fudge Sunday after Scrabble class and I snapped back with, “No, you cannot!” Needless to say I was starving. I was second guessing my decision. I kept thinking, “You’re taking away my right to choose what I want!” My brain was playing tricks on me. I had no idea how much I was addicted to sugar.

By the fifth day of my cleanse, the cravings subsided. I was able to eat within the parameters of my cleanse while my family ate something else. My newly found healthy habits are rubbing off on my kids! My step daughter and I enjoyed some celery and salsa together the other day. I carry a lunchbox everywhere I go so I don’t get hungry. I’ve already lost 8 pounds and I haven’t even had the surgery yet!

My dietitian told me she was glad to hear that I had been following the liver shrink regimens because she sees some people who don’t. My response, well hey, they just don’t want it bad enough. Getting to this point is huge for me. My surgery is less than a week away and I am one step closer to my new life!

I’ll be checking in periodically to share my milestones along the way. Until next time.

I was 36 at the time, and while I’ve never been skinny, I have an athletic build and played three sports throughout high school. I started struggling with my weight my first year of college when I was 18 years old. I have tried just about every diet on the market. I … Continue reading
